72 Hours in Madrid

Enjoy the latest blob by the Avid Traveller:

Let's start with a bit of history: Madrid has been the capital of Spain since mid-sixteenth century, when Philip II transferred the capital from Toledo. Between 1601 and 1606 the capital of Spain was moved to Valladolid but subsequently returned to Madrid.

In the fall of 2024, a fast 72-hour trip to Madrid with good friends was the best reason to explore the city's rich heritage. Our hotel, positioned in the heart of the city on Cal base to find Madrid's iconic landmarks and savour its gastronomic thrills. As we roamed through the city's lively plazas, we took in the contagious energy and historical significance that surrounded us.

Our group's diverse preferences resulted in different activities. Suzanne and Richard began the very firstday one night with a remarkable supper at Bodega de los Secretos, a comfortable, centuries-old restaurant filled with beauty. On day 2 my partner and I joined a tapas and red wine walking tour led by the enthusiastic Mario. We visited several regional hotspots, consisting of a mushroom specialized bar and an Iberian delicatessen, while finding out about Madrid's history and culture.

Day 3 was everything about cooking, with Pamela and Bill organizing a paella masterclass at the elegant Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez guided us through the complexities of making standard Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was coupled with tastings of local sherries and white wines, making it among the trip's highlights.

We settled the weekend with a see to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate place showcased the raw feeling and charm of flamenco dancing, providing an ideal cultural capstone.

Throughout the journey, we took pleasure in extraordinary meals at local dining establishments like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we delighted in authentic Spanish dishes such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the famed calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, providing a glimpse into Spain's rich culinary customs.
